A number of federal agencies focus on issues related to substance abuse. Their collaborative efforts are overseen by the so-called Drug Czar, The Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), who is a member of the President's Cabinet

This section of Drugstory.org highlights the resources and expertise that federal agencies can offer to entertainment writers and journalists, and includes a listing of all federal agencies linked to the site.

The section begins by highlighting agencies that have the most comprehensive information on substance abuse, beginning with ONDCP's sites, and followed by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Customs Service, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMSHA).

Other key federal sites-which are all listed alphabetically--include the Department of Justice, for information on crime and justice issues; the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the State Department, the Treasury Department and the Central Intelligence Agency, for information on domestic and international drug trafficking; the Department of Health and Human Services, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, for issues related to substance abuse and health; and the Department of Labor, for information on drug issues in the workplace.

Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).
Establishes policies, priorities and objectives for the Nation's drug control program. Links to substance abuse-related publications available online from a variety of Internet resources.

The Anti-Drug
Funded through ONDCP's National Youth Anti-drug Media Campaign. Educates parents about drugs and emphasizes the impact they can have in curbing their children's use of drugs.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Develops and applies disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities to improve the health of people in the United States.

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
The CIA is an independent agency, whose mission is to support the President, the National Security Council, and all officials who make and execute the U.S. national security policy.

Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)
This federal agency is the United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.

Department of Justice (DOJ)
Enforces the law and defends the interests of the United States according to the law, to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.

National Criminal Justice Reference Service
An information clearinghouse for people involved with research, policy, and practice related to criminal and juvenile justice and drug control.

National Institute of Justice
NIJ is the research and development agency of the U.S. Department of Justice and is the only Federal agency solely dedicated to researching crime control and justice issues.

Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program (ADAM)
A National Institute of Justice program that tracks trends in the prevalence and types of drug use among booked arrestees in urban areas.

Office for Victims of Crime (OVC)
Oversees programs and other resources that benefit victims of crime.

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)
Gives facts and figures on juvenile justice, delinquency prevention, and violence and victimization.

Department of Labor (DOL)
The U.S. Department of Labor is charged with preparing the American workforce for new and better jobs, protecting workers' wages, health and safety and ensuring the adequacy of America's workplaces.

Department of Labor's Working Partners for an Alcohol and Drug Free Workplace
Concentrates on drug related work issues with a comprehensive database on all related topics. Outlines how to create effective workplace substance abuse programs.

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
Enforces controlled substances laws and regulations in the United States. This site has general fact sheets on a variety of abused drugs, posts pictures and profiles of international/national fugitives involved in drug-related crime.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
The principal investigative arm of the United States Department of Justice.

Department of Homeland Security
This new department, formed in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, protects the nation against further terrorist attacks. Component agencies analyze threats and intelligence, guard borders and airports, protect critical infrastructure, and coordinate the response for future emergencies.

General Accounting Office (GAO)
GAO examines the use of public funds, evaluates federal programs and activities, and provides analyses, options, recommendations, and other assistance to help the Congress make effective oversight, policy, and funding decisions.

Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services
This bureau promotes national security, continues to eliminate immigration adjudication backlogs, and implements solutions for improving immigration customer services.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
Supports and conducts biomedical and behavioral research on the causes, consequences, treatment and prevention of alcoholism and alcohol-related problems.

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
A respected scientific research institution that studies and disseminates information on drug abuse and addiction prevention, treatment, and policy.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
SAMHSA builds resilience and facilitate recovery for people with or at risk for substance abuse and mental illness.

Office of Applied Studies (OAS)
Provides the latest national data on substance abuse, drug related emergency department episodes and medical examiner cases, and the nation's substance treatment system.

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP)
CSAP is the sole Federal organization with responsibility for improving accessibility and quality of substance abuse prevention services.

U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)
The U.S. Coast Guard is an agency of the Department of Transportation and is the lead federal agency for maritime drug interdiction and shares lead responsibility for air interdiction with the U.S. Customs Service.

U.S. Customs Service (USCS)
An agency of the U.S. Treasury Department, The United States Customs Service is the primary enforcement agency protecting the Nation's borders. It is the only border agency with an extensive air, land, and marine interdiction force and with an investigative component supported by its own intelligence branch.

U.S. State Department Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs
Advises the President, Secretary of State, other bureaus in the Department of State, and other departments and agencies within the U.S. Government on the development of policies and programs to combat international narcotics and crime.
